PUBLIC transport commuters have given the thumbs up to the idea of using smart cards as a payment system for bus services in Penang.

Wednesday, 01 Dec 2010

PUBLIC transport commuters have given the thumbs up to the idea of using smart cards as a payment system for bus services in Penang.

College student Lim Chee Wei, 19, said the ‘cashless’ system would help ensure a faster and hassle-free way of travelling in a public transport.

He also welcomed Rapid Penang’s plan to introduce double-decker buses in Penang next year.

“It’d be fun to sit in such a bus as one could get a good view from the upper deck,” he said in response to StarMetro’s front page report yesterday that Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd would not cut corners in its spending to bring high-quality double-decker buses to Penang next year.

The report quoted Rapid Penang Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Azhar Ahmad as saying the company would ensure that the vehicles were reliable and equipped with safety features.

Prasarana owns a fleet of buses in Penang, which are operated by Rapid Penang.

The company had planned to bring in 60 double-decker buses to service high-density areas in Penang by the end of next year.

A student from Perlis, Wati, 30, said it was a good idea to use a smart card to pay bus fares as it was more convenient.
“With the card, we only need to scan it to pay for the fare when we board the bus. So there’s no need for the hassle of preparing small change.

“I just tried to pay my fare with a RM5 note but the bus driver would not accept it,” she said at the Weld Quay bus terminal yesterday.

Student Ooi Yee Young, 18, said the smart card would enable her to save money.

“Sometimes, I would have to pay extra if I did not have the exact change to pay for my 70-sen fare, which is the standard rate for students in school uniform,” she said, adding that she and her friends took the bus home several times a week.
Another student, Chu Ching Yong, 18, said there would not be long queues if the electronic payment system was implemented.

“It would be easier and people don’t have to wait a long time to pay their fares.
“It could also help save the environment as no tickets (paper) will be used,” he said.

However, Tan Bee Hwa, 50, from Singapore, said there could be the danger of double-charging if using the smart card based on her experience in the republic.

“The passengers have to scan the card when they go up the bus and scan again when they get off. They would get a double charge if they forget to scan when getting off the bus.

“So passengers have to remember to scan their card before going down the bus to avoid a double charge,” she said.
Tan added that in Singapore, the card was used on the Mass Rapid Transit, Light Rail Transit and buses, saving time for commuters who need not have to prepare the exact change in advance.

“Users can top up the balance in the card in three different amounts. They are able to see the balance on the card after scanning it on the bus.

“If there’s not enough balance in the card to cover the fare, the machine makes a beeping sound and you would have to pay the fare by cash then,” she said.

Tan said tourists who were unaware of the card system could pay their fares by cash and get a bus ticket.
She lauded the bus and taxi systems in Penang, saying they were better than those in Kuala Lumpur.

However, Fatimah Abdullah, 59, from Seberang Jaya, finds it convenient to use the Rapid Penang bus pass.
“It costs RM75 a month and I can have unlimited bus rides for the month. I only have to show the card to the driver each time I get on the bus.

“It is cheaper for me to use the pass as I travel by bus to work six days a week,” she added.

Sadly missed: Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu is fondly remembered as a highly capable and dedicated leader with a fondness for orchids.

Friday, 26 Nov 2010

Sadly missed: Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu is fondly remembered as a highly capable and dedicated leader with a fondness for orchids.

TUN Dr Lim Chong Eu worked relentlessly to promote the high qualities and integrity of Penang’s work force.

Former Penang Development Corporation (PDC) general manager Datuk Seri Chet Singh fondly recalls how his former boss would speak highly of the local human resource pool to foreign companies.

“Dr Lim would stress to the foreign companies and multi-national corporations (MNCs) that the local workers could easily be trained to suit the job functions created by foreign investments in Penang.

“It was this constant promotion by Dr Lim that earned the trust of MNCs for Penang as an investment destination.

“He was the best of the lot,” said Chet who was PDC general manager from 1971 to 1991.

Former PDC deputy general manager Tengku Idaura Tengku Ibrahim, who served from 1992 to 1996, said Dr Lim was a very demanding but a fair and considerate boss.

Sadly missed: (From left) Land Public Transport Commission chairman Syed Hamid Albar
and former Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon expressing their condolences to
Dr Lim Chong Eu’s sons Chien Cheng at Dr Lim’s home on Jalan Haji Sudin, Hillside, Penang.

“With Dr Lim at the helm, work was the keyword of the day. Whenever there was a board meeting, Tun would quiz us before the meeting started to make sure we knew our facts.

“So every time before a board meeting, we had to study the facts and memorise them like in an exam,” Tengku Idaura said.

Free Industrial Zone Penang Companies Association (Frepenca) president Horst Rosenmueller said that as early as in 1969, Dr Lim had already identified the electronics industry as having the best potential to absorb the state’s excess semi-skilled labour.

“At that time, the state’s unemployment rate was 16.4% and Dr Lim was just starting his term as the second chief minister of Penang,” said Rosenmueller who spoke on behalf of Frepenca.

In order to address the social and economic problems, he said Dr Lim worked closely with the Federal Government to create a free trade zone in Penang under the Free Trade Zone Act 1971.

Komtar as a mark of respect for Dr Lim who passed away on Wednesday.

“Dr Lim and his team then worked tirelessly to invite foreign electronic companies to set up their plants in Penang. Hence, the start of the industrialisation process in Penang which has today attracted all the major electronic manufacturers to locate here.

“The members of Frepenca are truly indebted to Dr Lim for his enormous contributions to the state and country,” Rosenmueller said.

Penang Medical Practitioners’ Society president Datuk Dr Lim Huat Bee said Dr Lim, who was a past president of the society, was a highly respected leader and a distinguished colleague.

“He was always working to make Penang a better place to live and he would wake up in the middle of the night to jot down ideas that would make the lives of Penangites better,” he said in a press statement.

“He will be missed as a very good friend, a wise and kind adviser and a great leader for his many contributions to Malaysia and Penang in particular,” Huat Bee said.
